The moons was bright and full, casting its soft glow upon the meadow. The light struck the boulders, illuminating the meadow and the cats that filled it that night. It was a beautiful sight, as it was every moon. Yet something was different. It seemed that one group of cats were not there. The other clans looked around curiously, wondering where they could be. A few murmurs rumbled from the throats of some cats, while others simply looked around.
Batstar felt a twinge of unease. It wasn't like FireClan to be this late to a gathering. They were sometimes there before AirClan. Their absence was baffling, but he didn't let it show to his warriors. He kept a strong front, icily scanning over the cats around him. None of the leaders had jumped upon the boulders, but remained in the gr*censored*y meadow with their warriors.
Briefly, the small leader cursed Duststar. He probably forgot about the gathering -- he was extremely old and already had trouble recalling Batstar's name. He detested the elder warrior for his slipping memory, for it frustrated the brown-and-black tom when he couldn't remember the only leader that he had actually been comrades with. FireClan and AirClan didn't share a border, so they were able to idly chat at gatherings instead of worrying about future plans to rip the other clan apart. When the other leader became old, he began to forget all about the AirClan leader.
Annoyance was beginning to cloud over the unease. If FireClan didn't get there soon, he was going to start the gathering without them.

It had been a truly stressful week for the new Fireclan leader, Tawnystar. Duststar had p*censored*ed away to join the ranks of Starclan three days ago. And yesterday, the tawny deputy had received his nine lives and leader name. He young for a leader, but still worthy of the title. Fireclan had kept their leader's death a secret, 'till the gathering, because they thought it would be best that way. And tonight, Fireclan was late to the gathering.
Tawnystar led his warriors through the undergrowth, and pushed into the clearing, walking forward. Now all four clans were present. A few cats noticed Duststar's absence, and began whispering to their clanmates. Tawnystar ignored all of this, and leaped up onto the boulder *censored*igned to Fireclan. He had an important and sad announcement to make to the clans.
Light blue eyes waited patiently for each of the other leaders to take their seats. It was obvious that something grave had happened in Fireclan.

Batstar's dark eyes hardened as he smelled FireClan near the clearing. Among the scents, the small tom couldn't detect their old leader. As the late clan finally emerged from the foliage, he noticed that FireClan was being led by a different cat. A young tom who he did not recognize. Had Duststar p*censored*ed away?
He watched with scrutiny as the young tom leaped onto the boulder destined for the FireClan leader, confirming Batstar's belief. He was still a little surprised by this tom -- he couldn't remember him quite well from any previous gathering. His presence made the AirClan leader angry. He was so young and obviously inexperienced. How could he replace FireClan's previous leader? Vicious thoughts surged through his mind, but he pushed them back.
As he strode to the AirClan rock, he sharply meowed, "You're late." He shot the new tom a glare as the other leaders to their spots.

Tawnystar glared right back at Batstar, but refused to let his temper get the best of him. "Cats of all clans, a tragedy has struck Fireclan. Duststar has joined Starclan forever." He paused, letting the gasps from the other clans take over, and the mourning yowls from his clanmates.
"Duststar was a great leader, and I was honored when he chose me as his deputy. But now I have succeeded Duststar, and am now leader of Fireclan." At the end of his speech, all the Fireclan cats chanted, "Tawnystar, Tawnystar, Tawnystar."
He looked around, letting the other leaders have their say about Duststar's death. Tawnystar was easily the youngest leader their, dwarfed by the other's wisdom and experience.

Hearing the words were much more painful than thinking them. Duststar was easily considered a friend to Batstar and he was unsure what to say. He thought over his words as much as he could as WaterClan and EarthClan gave their say on the old leader. As they came to him, he was hesitant to say anything at first, but finally gave way as he knew he had to.
"Duststar was a great leader. He was extremely wise and competent and I am happy to have known him. I can only hope that FireClan's new leader can live up to his legacy," he meowed, shooting a glance at the young tom. "Tawnystar, yes? I hope you are able to keep FireClan strong. Try to avoid doing anything mouse-brained."
He knew he shouldn't be doing that at a gathering, how could he believe that he could replace Duststar? What was the leader thinking when he chose this cat at his deputy, anyway? Batstar could easily tell he didn't have what it took to be a good leader, and he would have to be a superb leader to match up with Duststar.

Tawnystar bowed his head in mourning as the leaders spoke. But when Batstar spoke, Tawnystar could hear the hidden challenge, and looked up. Duststar had been like another father to him, after his family perished, and Batstar's words hit home. Tawnystar had been worrying about doing something mouse-brained as well. But coming from Batstar, it angers him.
"Thank you all for your kind words towards Duststar. And, Batstar, I may not be Duststar, but that doesn't make me incompetent either." He almost added, 'you shouldn't be bitter because you know you'll be joining Duststar soon enough, old one.' But he held his tongue. "And in no way, shape or form, are Fireclan any weaker then we were. We have two new apprentices, Gingerpaw and Leopardpaw."
Tawnystar listened as the Waterclan leader spoke, and the Earthclan, then turned to hear Batstar speak.
